Evolution

The internet evolved from a military research project into a global, AI-driven infrastructure.

  1. 1969

    ARPANET and the First Message

    Funded by the U.S. Department of Defense's Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), ARPANET sent its first message ("LO") between computers at UCLA and Stanford on October 29.

    Artificial intelligence was fundamental to the U.S. Department of Defense's vision when they laid the groundwork for ARPANET in 1969. The military's interest in computing during that decade was heavily driven by the idea of building intelligent, adaptive systems.The Visionary behind it: In 1962, J.C.R. Licklider became the first director of the Information Processing Techniques Office (IPTO) at ARPA (the Pentagon's research arm). Licklider was a psychologist and computer scientist who wrote a seminal 1960 paper titled "Man-Computer Symbiosis," where he envisioned humans and intelligent computers making decisions together in real time.

    Funding the Pioneers: Under Licklider and his successors (Ivan Sutherland and Bob Taylor), ARPA was not just building networks; it was the primary financial backer for early AI labs. Millions of defense dollars went directly to Marvin Minsky and John McCarthy (who coined the term "Artificial Intelligence") at MIT, as well as teams at Stanford and Carnegie Mellon.

    Why the Military Cried Out for AI: Cold War military strategists realized that human command-and-control systems were too slow to handle real-time missile telemetry, radar data processing, and rapid crisis response. They wanted autonomous decision-support systems, natural language understanding, and automated pattern recognition.

    How ARPANET Fit In: ARPANET was created in part to solve a practical AI research problem: high-performance computers running early AI models were extremely expensive. Connecting these computers via a network allowed defense-funded researchers nationwide to share scarce computational power and AI software tools without having to build a supercomputer at every university campus.

    By 1969, the military was actively bankrolling artificial intelligence, explicitly hoping it would transform strategic command and autonomous data processing. ARPANET was simply the digital backbone built to connect those intelligent computing projects.

    TCP/IP Standardization

    ARPANET adopted Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). This standard communications language allowed disparate computer networks to interconnect, establishing the modern "internet."

The First Working Network Bob Taylor & Larry Roberts: Managed the ARPANET project at DARPA in the late 1960s, overseeing the construction of the first operational packet-switching network. Paul Baran & Donald Davies: Independently invented packet switching in the 1960s—the method of breaking data down into small blocks to transmit them efficiently across a network. In short: Cerf and Kahn built the underlying plumbing (the internet), while Berners-Lee built the user-friendly application that made it accessible to the world (the Web).

  3. 1989–1991

    World Wide Web Invention

    Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web at CERN in 1989. In 1991, the first website went live, introducing HTML, HTTP, and URLs to the public.

  4. 1995

    Dot-Com Boom & Commercial Era

    The U.S. government lifted remaining restrictions on commercial internet use. Amazon and eBay launched, and Netscape's IPO sparked the mainstream commercial expansion.

  5. 2004–2007

    Social Media & Web 2.0

    The internet shifted from static pages to user-generated platforms. Facebook launched in 2004, YouTube in 2005, and the release of the iPhone in 2007 made mobile internet access ubiquitous.

  6. 2010s

    Cloud Computing & Streaming Dominance

    High-speed broadband and 4G enabled the rise of cloud platforms (AWS), streaming services (Netflix, Spotify), and mobile-first apps, shifting computing power away from local hardware.

  7. 2022–2025

    Generative AI Integration

    Following the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022, the internet transitioned into an AI-native ecosystem. Search engines, web browsers, and enterprise infrastructure integrated real-time generative models directly into the web interface.

Language

No single person invented the language of the internet; it was created by various standardizers, engineers, and everyday web users across three distinct layers: the technical protocols, the web content standards, and the digital culture/slang.

  1. 1970s–1980s

    The Network Protocols (TCP/IP, ASCII, DNS)

    Vint Cerf & Bob Kahn designed TCP/IP (1974), creating the fundamental syntax and rules for how data packets identify themselves and travel across networks.

    Bob Bemer and the ASA standardized ASCII (1963–1968), establishing the standard numerical codes for English characters across hardware.

    Paul Mockapetris invented the Domain Name System (DNS) in 1983, translating human-readable web addresses (like google.com) into machine-friendly IP addresses.

  2. 1989–1996

    The Web Standards (HTML, HTTP, CSS, JS)

    Tim Berners-Lee created HTML (HyperText Markup Language) and HTTP in 1989–1991, allowing computers to request, format, and display hyperlinked documents.

    Brendan Eich created JavaScript in 1995 while at Netscape, adding interactive programming logic to static web pages.

    Håkon Wium Lie proposed CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) in 1994, which was standardized by the W3C in 1996 to separate web page design/layout from raw text content.

  3. 1982–1999

    Early Digital Culture & Emoticons

    Scott Fahlman proposed using :-) and :-( on a Carnegie Mellon bulletin board in 1982, inventing the text-based emoticon to convey tone online.

    Early IRC, Usenet, and gaming communities popularised leetspeak (1337) and shorthand acronyms (LOL, BRB, AFK) to save keystrokes on slow modems.

  4. 1999–2010s

    Global Visual Language (Emoji & Unicode)

    Shigetaka Kurita designed the first 176 emojis in 1999 for Japan's NTT DOCOMO mobile network.

    The Unicode Consortium standardized emojis in 2010, allowing visual symbols to render consistently across all operating systems globally.

  5. 2010s–2020s

    Internet Slang & Algorithmic Dialects

    Platforms like Tumblr, Twitter, and TikTok accelerated the spread of online dialects (e.g., Rizz, No Cap, Main Character).

    Social media algorithms created "algospeak"—intentional typos and euphemisms designed to bypass automated content moderation filters.
